Hardwood is a term used for wood that has a more complex structure than softwood. The main property that differentiates a hardwood from softwood it that it has pores also know as vessles. The most common species of hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple and cherry. There are also species such as teak, mahogany, elm, ash, and merabu. These are just a few of the types of hardwood species. Hardwood comes from all over the world, typically places including North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. It's application for flooring creates a unique appearance because no two boards are the same even if they come from the same tree.

The hardwoods we offer at SNC have amazing finishes that can withstand accidents that sometimes occur with day to day living. Our hardwoods offer finishes like Scotchguard and CrystalShield. The Scotchguard is an aluminum oxide finish with UV protection that offers resistance to marks of all kinds, including paint, polish, and permanent marker. These come off easily with a few wipes of a soft dry cloth avoiding harsh chemicals and abrasives. This keeps your warranty in tact and avoids damaging your hardwood surface. CrystalSheild is created by curing microscopic ceramic particals right into the aluminum oxide formula. It adds an extra layer of strength, resilience, and protection to your floor so that wood ages easily and gracefully resisting scars, nicks, and abrasions while retaining it's pristine gloss and beauty.

What is the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?

Solid Hardwood

Solid wood is milled from a single 1/2" to 3/4" thick piece of hardwood. Because of its thickness, a solid hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use. Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home's relative humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall. Base molding or quarter round is traditionally used to hide this extra space.

Engineered

Engineered wood is produced using pure veneers tightly bonded to a cross-grained solid popular, spruce, or other core for maximum strength and durability.  Because of this, engineered wood flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be installed from attic to basement, even in highly humid climates.

Before deciding on whether to use Solid or Engineered hardwood flooring, consider these factors:

Where is the hardwood going to be used?

The location of your hardwood flooring basically falls into three categories:

  • On Grade - at ground level

  • Above Grade - any second level or higher

  • Below Grade - any floor below ground level, including basements or sunken living rooms.

Traditional solid hardwood flooring is not well suited for high moisture areas such as bathrooms or below-grade installations. The construction of an engineered hardwood gives it enhanced structural stability and moisture resistance that allows it to be installed at any grade level.

What type of subfloor do you have?

If you plan to install over concrete, you must use an engineered product to ensure structural integrity. Solid wood flooring or Engineered flooring may be used over plywood, wood, or OSB subfloors.

Will there be moisture in the room?

If so, you'll want to select an Engineered hardwood. The moisture resistance of an engineered hardwood makes it suitable for rooms where moisture is a possibility, such as bathrooms.
