What is Granite?
Granite is an igneous rock that has visible crystal formation and texture. It is made up of feldspar, quartz, a small amount of mica, zircon, apatite, magnetite, ilmenite, and sphene. Millions of years ago molten rock was pushed up from the Earth's core to the surface. Extremly slow cooling rates caused the variations in color, crystalization, consistancy, and beauty. Granite is the most common intrusive rock exposed at the Earth's surface. It has greater strength than sandstone, limestone, and marble which also makes it a harder material to quarry. Granite is typically catagorized into three different groups; fine grain, medium grain, and course grain. Fine grain granite is where the feldspar ranges from 1/16-1/8" in diameter. In medium grain granite, the feldspar averages more like 1/4" in diameter. Coorespondingly, course granite contains feldspar of a larger diameter, 1/2" or greater. The course grain granite sometimes has a lower density due to the feldspar being larger and not as tightly packed. Granite is always a great choice for almost any residential or commercial counter, vanity, table top since it's strength is almost equal to diamonds.
