What Are the Characteristics of Different Types of Fibers?

Nylon

Nylon is the most common of all carpet fibers, and its high durability makes it a popular choice for areas of the home that receive high foot traffic. Resistant to most dirt, mildew and moisture, this fiber is also known for its ease of maintenance and non-allergenic properties.

  • Durable, resilient
  • Abrasion-resistant
  • Versatile in coloration possibilities
  • Favorably priced
  • Must be treated to be stain- and soil-resistant
  • First used in carpet in 1959
  • Commonly used in residential and commercial applications
  • Accounts for 65% of all face fibers in carpet

PET Polyester

This is an excellent fiber choice for the budget-conscious. Polyester shares many of nylon’s non-allergenic, moisture and wear-resistant properties, but lacks the same degree of durability.
  • Resistant to water-soluble stains
  • Noted for luxurious "hand"
  • Offered primarily as a staple product, although some BCF is being produced
  • 100% of Mohawk's Staple Polyester is PET Polyester, manufactured from recycled plastic bottles
  • Color clarity
  • Colorfastness

Triexta PTT

A completely new form of carpeting where fibers are extruded from a new generation of polymer, giving the carpet exceptional durability along with built-in stain-resistance, color clarity, colorfastness, a luxurious softness and ease of maintenance.
  • Permanent, built-in stain protection
  • Wear-resistant
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Luxurious softness
  • Quick-drying
  • Currently used in residential applications and as BCF

Olefin or Polypropylene

This fiber was first used in carpets designed for the outdoors and in spaces with high levels of moisture and humidity. Color-fastness, resilience and resistance to water damage, mildew and piling are important benefits of this fiber. Polypropylene fiber is also recognized for a luxurious appearance and outstanding softness.

  • Resists fading
  • Inherently stain-resistant
  • Limited color selection
  • Generates low levels of static electricity
  • Chemical-, moisture- and stain-resistant
  • Favorably priced
  • Offered primarily as BCF with some staple product available

What Are the Different Types of Carpet?

Cut pile: Cut pile is a durable style, recieving it's durability from the type of fiber used, tufts density, and the number of twists the yarn recieves. Yarn using more twists will retain shape longer. This is a great choice for any areas that are high-traffic.

Textured Plush - It's textured surfaces help hide marks in the carpet including, footprints or vacuum marks. This is a great choice for any type of household.

Saxony - Great selection for traditionally designed interiors. Works very well in living, dining, or family rooms.

Frieze - High texture style fining it's texture from extremely twisted yarns. Works well for an informal appearance. Also helps hide marks in the carpet including, footprints or vacuum marks.

Plush - A dense style with a pampered  feel. Better selection for formal or low-traffic areas because it tends to shows footprints and vacuum marks more easily.

Level loop pile: Loops of the carpet are the same height, creating a more informal look. Great for high-traffic areas. Also known as the Berber style often using flecks of a darker color on a lighter background. A great choice for contemporary or cottage design.

Multi-level loop pile: A style usually having two to three different loop heights creating pattern effects and providing durability with a more informal look.

Cut-loop pile: A style combining cut and looped yarns. Avaliable in a variety of textures with a sculptured appearance of shapes and designs. Great for hiding soil and stains due to the multicolor effects.
